Over the years, travel has taken me across borders and into all kinds of classrooms. But no matter where I go, I’m always reminded of those first years teaching -- that mix of excitement, nerves, and curiosity that comes with finding your footing in a new place.
These days, when I travel, I try to visit schools whenever I can. Sometimes it’s to catch up with old colleagues, other times to meet new educators just getting started. But it’s always about staying connected to the work of building classrooms where every student feels like they belong.
That sense of belonging isn’t optional. It’s the foundation. Whether you’re teaching across cultures, languages, or abilities, creating an inclusive community is the real work. When I speak, I talk about the everyday ways teachers make that happen -- the small moves that build trust, the strategies that help kids feel seen from day one, and the heartfelt (and often hilarious) moments that stick with you long after the school day ends.
